Everyone 18 or older—except those who are currently pregnant. Start testing with Function to see where your health stands—and where it’s headed.
Function was founded in the US and is based in Austin, Texas.
Function is offered in labs across 48 states (but not yet Rhode Island, Hawai'i, or Puerto Rico).
We created Function with a single mission: empower you to live 100 healthy years. That starts by giving you a more complete view of your body through 160+ lab tests, advanced imaging, and insights from top doctors. From heart, hormones, and immunity to early signs of cancers, aneurysms, cysts, fatty liver, and more, Function can help you detect changes before symptoms appear—so you can take action earlier, and feel your best longer. It's time you own your health.
Your body, mind, and healthcare system should function. But corrupted food systems, chronic stress, and outdated practices can push you toward dysfunction. We exist to change that. We give you insights across your body—heart, hormones, thyroid, nutrients, toxins, inflammation, and more—so you can stay in control.
Testing now can help you keep feeling your best—and may catch small signals that could turn into bigger problems down the line. For example, heart disease can build for decades. Cancer can be silent until later stages.
Most doctors wait for symptoms to show up before ordering many of these tests. Function gives you a deeper view now—so you can spot trends, catch changes early, and stay ahead.
After signing up, log in to Function to easily schedule your lab visit at one of over 2,000 Quest Diagnostics locations nationwide at the time that works for you.
We partner with Quest Diagnostics for easily accessible labs (2,000+ locations across the US) and results trusted by the nation’s medical community. Find a Quest near you.
*Please note, due to certain third-party limitations, not all results displayed on Quest's site are available for scheduling Function lab visits. To find a verified Quest Diagnostics lab location near you, please click on the question mark on the bottom right of the website to open a chat, and enter "Find an approved testing location" with your zip code.
About 15 minutes. That’s it.
At least twice a year. Membership includes 160+ lab tests annually, selected by the world’s top doctors to monitor for signs of thousands of diseases. Start with 100+ tests at your annual visit, and follow up with 60+ tests 3-6 months later to see what’s changed. Hormones, heart, thyroid, nutrients, metals, metabolic health, autoimmunity, liver, and electrolytes—what others skip, we don’t. You can test any biomarker on-demand anytime for an additional member-only cost.
Many members can complete their Annual Test in a single lab visit. But members with an active menstrual cycle will need 2 separate visits for accurate hormone results. Members in Arizona also require 2 visits because of state processing rules. We will walk you through any details that apply to you during scheduling.
Go to “Get Tests” then select “Schedule Lab Tests.” From there you can purchase Add-Ons or a re-test of any biomarkers.
Yes. You must use your Mid-Year Test before your annual renewal. It includes 60+ biomarkers to track changes over time and doesn’t roll over.
In your account, select the arrow next to the upcoming visit you'd like to reschedule and choose the "Reschedule" option.
Members get access to 160+ lab tests annually, covering heart, hormones, thyroid, liver, and kidneys, as well as potential heavy metal exposures, nutrient levels, inflammation, potential cancer signals, and more. See all that's included here.
Our doctors—including Function’s Chief Medical Officer Mark Hyman, M.D.—hand-picked every test based on the latest science around disease detection and long-term health impact. This broader view can give you key insights to take action sooner, such as identifying elevated ApoB levels that increase cardiovascular risk even when standard cholesterol appears normal, or detecting hormone imbalances (like thyroid or sex hormones) that can affect energy, metabolism, mood, and fertility long before symptoms become obvious.
Anything less could miss critical parts of your health. Typical physicals tend to focus on conventional standards—and what insurance will cover. This broader view can give you key insights to take action sooner.
Function uses medical-grade tests and labs that meet the highest clinical standards.
Add-On Tests help you dig even deeper into your health. Choose them based on your goals or risk factors, like the Galleri® Multi-Cancer Test. Available for an additional cost. See the full list of tests.
Function gives you access to lab tests that measure key biomarkers tied to metabolic health—including Hemoglobin A1c and Insulin.
Function goes beyond the standard lipid panel and includes advanced biomarkers like Apolipoprotein B, Lipoprotein A, and Lipoprotein Particle Size. These can help you catch red flags early when traditional tests don’t.
Yes. Function includes a detailed set of thyroid biomarkers, including TSH, T3, and T4.
Mercury and lead are included in your membership. You can also access Add-On Tests for arsenic and aluminum.
Yes. Members can add on the Galleri® Multi-Cancer Test, which looks for signals of 50+ cancers before they become symptomatic.
Function gives you access to an Add-On Test for Apolipoprotein E (ApoE), a biomarker tied to risk of Alzheimer’s.
Yes. Function has Add-On Tests to look for signs of food and environmental allergies.
Yes, you can access testing for chlamydia, herpes, and more through Add-On Tests.
Function tests major fertility hormones such as FSH (follicle-stimulating hormone) and LH (luteinizing hormone) in both men and women. If you have a regular period, you’ll want to test on day 3 of your cycle for the clearest snapshot. Function gives you fertility-related data—but it doesn’t make clinical calls. Talk to your doctor to interpret the results and decide what to do next.
We’ll still help you test key biomarkers like AMH, TSH, and Free T3/T4. But we don’t run biomarkers that are likely to be skewed—like FSH, LH, and Estradiol—since birth control can interfere with those results.
Some health questions need multiple biomarkers for a more complete picture. That’s why some Add-Ons include grouped biomarkers.
Both illnesses and vaccines can temporarily raise inflammation biomarkers like hs-CRP. For the most accurate read, we recommend waiting at least 2 weeks after vaccination before testing.
Yes—fast for 8 hours before your test. It helps ensure accurate results for key biomarkers. Stay well-hydrated, too. It makes blood draws smoother and improves urinalysis accuracy.
Yes. Morning labs give the most accurate read on hormones like testosterone and cortisol.
No. Never stop taking medications without talking to your doctor first.
Biotin (Vitamin B7) can interfere with hormone and thyroid markers. Some people choose to pause it 72 hours before testing.
Yes—avoid seafood for 48 hours before tests that check for heavy metals like mercury.
About 35-85 mL depending on the person. For comparison, a typical blood donation is around 500 mL. Pro tip: Hydrate well. It makes the draw easier and faster.
No worries, your phlebotomist is trained and experienced. Just let them know if you’ve fainted in the past. Blood draws are generally safe and there is very little risk.
Not at this time. Many biomarkers shift during pregnancy, making the results harder to interpret.
If you are cycle-syncing, you can test after 2 full menstrual cycles postpartum.
As soon as they are available. Typically, your first batch of results start arriving within 48 hours of testing.
Yes. Every result comes with explanations created by top doctors and built on thousands of hours of research—so you’ll actually understand what your numbers mean. You’ll get action items and a clinician’s full summary.
Insights are tailored to your unique results. They’re sourced from a group of the world’s top doctors—including Function’s Chief Medical Officer, Mark Hyman, M.D. All insights are grounded in peer-reviewed scientific studies from trusted sources like the NIH, JAMA, and NEJM.
If any result is critical, a healthcare provider will call you right away.
Yes. Once your results are ready, you can log in and download them as a PDF to share with your healthcare provider.
Great. Upload your results to Function so you can track everything in one place over time.
Biomarkers are measurable signals in your body—like a hormone, protein, or vital sign—that can reflect shifts in your health even before symptoms show up. For example, elevated Apolipoprotein B levels can be linked to increased heart disease risk. Tracking biomarkers helps you spot changes early, so you can take action sooner.
Yes. Biomarkers shift with your lifestyle, stress, diet, and sleep. Regular testing shows what’s changing—and gives you the power to act on it.
Yes. You can log into Function and connect supported apps to sync your health data—all in one place. Head to “Connected Apps” after logging in to get started.
A CAC scan is often recommended for asymptomatic adults who are at intermediate or uncertain cardiovascular risk and for whom the results would help guide prevention decisions. It is generally not used to evaluate symptoms or to assess known coronary artery disease. We offer this test for adults 35-85 years old. We do not offer the test for those with coronary stents, cardiac pacemakers, prior bypass surgery, or known coronary artery disease (CAD).
A “gated” CAC scan is a specialized CT scan that uses electrocardiogram (ECG) synchronization to capture images of the heart at precise times. By timing images with your heartbeat, it minimizes motion and provides a measurement of coronary artery calcium. This scan is performed without contrast and focuses specifically on the coronary arteries.
We recommend restricting caffeine/coffee to keep heart rate from interfering with results. We also recommend you wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing with no metal — a t-shirt and sweatpants or athletic shorts are preferred. Avoid dresses, underwire bras (bras without underwire or any metal are acceptable), belts, and clothing with zippers or snaps. You’ll also be asked to remove any jewelry, piercings, or hair accessories before your scan.
You will receive a CAC score. A score of 0 means no calcium was detected, which is a strong sign of heart health. A higher score indicates more buildup and may point to elevated cardiovascular risk. Your results come with context and recommended next steps.
MRIs can reveal signs of many cancers, evidence of fatty liver, aneurysms, endometriosis, signs of prior stroke, changes in the brain, skeletal issues, and more. CTs can help screen for signs of lung cancer and calcified plaque buildup in the blood vessels of the heart with a calcium score. You may also want to consider a scan because of:Family history: If certain conditions—like heart disease or cancer—run in your family, imaging can be a proactive tool to help understand and monitor your risk.Out-of-range lab results: If your lab tests show patterns linked to increased risk, imaging—guided by a healthcare provider—can give you more context.Past medical history or symptoms: If you have certain medical history or unexplained symptoms, MRI or CT may be the next best option to reveal what’s going on.
MRIs are traditionally expensive and hard to access. Function makes it simple and affordable while maintaining a high standard of care. A board-certified radiologist reviews every MRI. Our Annual MRI looks at your head, neck, abdomen, and pelvis. It can help scan for signs of hundreds of potential conditions, including signs of cancers of the brain, thyroid, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, ovaries, uterus, and prostate. The MRI also scans for signs of prior stroke, sinus inflammation, fatty liver, uterine fibroids, and abdominal aortic aneurysm.
No, but your Function membership unlocks special pricing on MRIs and CTs. We recommend an Annual MRI to complete your health baseline and track your health every year.
Log in to Function and scroll down to Scans on the home screen. From there, you can add an MRI or CT scan. You’ll be guided to set up an Ezra account. Your Function member credit will be applied automatically.
MRIs and CTs are available at 200+ locations across the US, and expanding fast. Search here.
MRI stands for magnetic resonance imaging. An MRI shows detailed pictures of the inside of your body—like your organs, tissues, and bones. It uses a giant magnet along with electromagnetic and radio waves to capture these images—think of it as a super-powerful camera. Our MRIs take as little as 22 minutes and use no harmful radiation. The machines have wider openings than in the past, are fully lit, ventilated, and open at both ends (above your head and below your feet) for greater comfort during the exam. In some cases, you may be able to listen to music to help you relax during the exam. Your technician will see you and be in contact with you at all times during your MRI.
CT stands for computed tomography. CTs use a series of X-ray images that a computer combines into detailed 3D pictures of your lungs and chest. Our low-dose CTs (LDCTs) do use a small amount of radiation—about 2-3 millisieverts—which is FDA-cleared and generally considered safe and effective. LDCTs expose you to significantly less radiation than a standard CT. The scan takes just a few minutes, and you lie still while holding your breath briefly as images are captured. Your technician will see you and be in contact with you at all times during your scan.
The Annual MRI takes ~22 minutes and is available to Function members for $999. It is the most affordable, time-efficient way to get an advanced view of your body’s organs and structures. It looks at your head, neck, abdomen, and pelvis. It can help look for hundreds of potential conditions, including cancers of the brain, thyroid, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, bladder, ovaries, uterus, and prostate. Also looks for signs of prior stroke, sinus inflammation, fatty liver, uterine fibroids, and abdominal aortic aneurysm. The MRI with Spine takes ~47 minutes and includes everything in the Annual MRI, plus targeted spine coverage to screen for spinal lesions and tumors, herniated discs, cervical spinal stenosis, spondylosis, fractures, scoliosis, arthritis, and other degenerative changes. The MRI with Skeletal & Neurological Assessment is 2 sessions of about an hour each. It includes everything in the MRI Scan with Spine, plus looks for signs of neurodegeneration in the brain and narrowing in the arteries of the head and neck with magnetic resonance angiogram (MRA), and provides a brain age analysis. It also includes body composition assessment (fat and muscle volume), hip evaluation (labrum, cartilage, and joint health), and knee scans (for meniscus, ACL, and MCL injuries). The Lungs CT takes ~3 minutes. This single low-dose chest CT can help screen for signs of lung cancer, pulmonary nodules, emphysema, and more. The Heart CT takes ~5 minutes and is a Gated Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) scan. "Gated" means the CT images are timed with your heartbeat to avoid blurriness from heart motion and produce clearer, more accurate images. It measures calcium deposits in the coronary arteries to produce a validated Coronary Artery Calcium (CAC) score to help you understand your long-term risk for heart disease.
These tests can work together. The Galleri® Multi-Cancer Test looks for cancer signals (ctDNA, circulating tumor DNA) in your blood; whereas Function scans take an imaging approach to cancer detection to “visualize” tumors in the body. Two views, one goal: providing more insights, earlier.
Do not eat any food 6 hours before your appointment. (A full stomach can obscure anatomy, affecting the image quality.) Limit fluid intake about 2 hours before to avoid needing to use the restroom during the appointment. For the day before, avoid fried/greasy and gas-producing foods (soda, seltzer, beans, broccoli, cabbage, etc). Contact your doctor regarding any medications. If you have a medication patch, remove it before your appointment for safety. For members receiving the coronary artery calcium (CAC) score, limit caffeine to keep your heart rate from interfering with results. Metallic objects can interfere with imaging, so remove them from your body before your appointment.
